The text of the Sanctus will forever carry in my mind the image of officials carrying incense past the pews of a cathedral and up to the alter, swinging the metal thurible as they go to release the smoke. There's something solemn, unreachable, and strangely alien in the ritual associated with invoking the sacred, but there is also incredible beauty in its deliberateness. The steady pace, unity of purpose, and contrasts of the movement all draw on these ideas. This movement also features the first extended solo of the piece.
