The Kyrie uses large, imposing chords mixed with sections of fluid lines and contrapuntal writing to set the opening text of the mass. The movement follows the traditional form of the Kyrie, in which two outer sections of "Kyrie eleison" surround a central section of "Christe eleison", which often has a different character than the Kyrie sections. Here, the contrast is homophonic vs contrapuntal. One small note: the short bass solo at the return of the Kyrie section contains an unintentional but very welcome reference to Faure's "Requiem".
