about

The Agnus Dei closes the mass with a certain quietness. It is much sparser than the other movements, and like the Kyrie, it has little or no organ depending on the performance. Also like the Kyrie, it has three main sections: two repetitions of the main text ending with "miserere nobis", and one ending with "dona nobis pacem". Each of these sections build into a large chord reminiscent of earlier movements before pulling back into simplicity for their final invocations. The last moments of the piece break the harmonic pattern established in the first two cycles, and simply follow the dominant to close this dark and searching mass on the idea of effortless grace.

lyrics

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, // Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,
miserere nobis. // have mercy on us.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, // Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,
miserere nobis. // have mercy on us.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, // Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,
dona nobis pacem. // grant us peace.
